Daniela’s Little Wish: Baking smiles for kids with illnesses or disabilities

Article published on: News 8

“When I was four years old, it just came to me,” remembers Daniela Delgado who cooked-up a beautiful idea while she was in the kitchen.  “I just thought, ‘Hey, I want to bake cakes for kids with severe illnesses or disabilities.'”

And, ever since, she’s done just that, creating Daniela’s Little Wish with support from her parents.  Daniela’s empathy comes from experience.  She was born with a blood disorder called Von Willebrand disease.

“I have to remind myself that there are so many other people suffering worse than me but they still manage to smile,” says the girl, now eleven years old.

“She is a great kid,” says her dad, Nemorio.  “She’s really shown us how to be more respectful and more demanding of ourselves.”

Daniela has donated and delivered thousands of hand-crafted cakes, made to order.

“We did this amazing cake, it was so realistic – it was a hamster cake,” she remembers, explaining that it was modeled after a boy’s pet.  “We made an exact replica using fondant when he saw it, he was so amazed, he was like, ‘Wow.'”

Daniela also travels the county giving motivational speeches.  She even holds cupcake workshops to inspire other kids.

“I want to continue this as long as I possibly can,” she says.

The Delgados say this generosity makes them strong as a family.  Spreading sweetness just feels good.

“Our purpose here is to bake smiles for others and bring joy and happiness everywhere,” says Daniela.

The sixth grader doesn’t stop.  This holiday season, she’s holding cupcake workshops and delivering treats to kids with special needs.
